The different types of mold found in our homes

There are many different types of molds found in our homes. Each type of mold has its own distinct appearance and specific health problem. All types of molds do cause health problems and are usually unsightly . They also cause an unpleasant , musty smell and are found in different places inside and outside your house.

The following are the different types of household mold :

-Alternaria: This type of mold grows in damp spaces such as showers and under sinks whose pipes are leaky. They can also grow in carpets that have been damp for a considerable period of time. However ,it can also be found in areas with little moisture .It spreads very easily and can be found outdoors and also indoors. It is known to cause allergy symptoms as well as asthma especially in children and elderly people. Alternaria also causes health problems to people with such conditions such as respiratory infections and low immunity .

- Cladosporium: This type of mold grows on wooden surfaces and on fabrics such as carpets. It is also found outdoors, especially on plants . It usually gets into your house through open windows , doorways , or through HVAC systems . Cladosporium causes problems to your nails , skin , and the respiratory system.It is also associated with other health problems such as upper respiratory infections ,itchy eyes , sneezing, coughing , allergic reactions , and runny nose.

- Penicillium: This kind of mold is commonly found in things such as insulation, wallpaper, carpeting , and rotting fabrics , such as couch curtains and old mattresses. It spreads very quickly from one place to another. It is one of the most common type of molds .Exposure to penicillium can cause chronic sinus infection , inflammation of the lungs, and allergy symptoms .

Stachybotrys Chartarum: This type of mold is sometimes referred to as ' black mold’ because of its black slimy look. It is usually found in places with continuous moisture ,such as around leaky pipes and also in air conditioning ducts where a lot of condensation takes place. It is also capable of spreading to other areas within your house. Among all the types of molds, stachbotrys chartarum is often associated with the highest number of health problems.

Exposure to this type of mold can lead to asthma attacks, chronic sinus infection, depression, fatigue and allergy symptoms.
